Please arrive on time to get the most from your consultation. If you are after a major restyle, have longer hair, or a very full beard, a longer slot may be better. Mention it when booking or call 01273 328799 so we can advise. ##### Aftercare & Maintenance Wash and style as normal. Use a small amount of product to hold shape without weight. For a matte finish, use paste or clay. For natural sheen, use a light cream. Brush or comb your beard daily. Apply a few drops of oil or a light balm to keep the lines defined and the skin comfortable. Avoid aggressive at home edging between visits. Most clients maintain the look with visits every 2 to 4 weeks. If you wear scalp micropigmentation or are considering tricopigmentation, keep hair to the agreed length and choose matte products to reduce shine. ### Shampoo, Cut and Finish and Hot Towel Shave URL: https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/services/shampoo-cut-and-finish-and-hot-towel-shave Settle in for a proper barbershop refresh here in Brighton. We work to time without rushing the details. For the closest result, avoid shaving for 24 to 48 hours before your visit. Please arrive on time so we can make the most of your slot. ##### Aftercare & Maintenance After the shave, avoid hot showers, steam or heavy exfoliation the same day. Rinse with cool water if needed and use an alcohol free balm. For hair, avoid washing for a few hours to let the finish settle. Use a light matte product or sea salt spray for natural hold. Most clients book haircuts every 3 to 5 weeks. Book shaves as needed, weekly or before key dates, to maintain a smooth result. ### Skin Fade in Brighton URL: https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/services/skin-fade A skin fade is a clean, close finish that blends from skin at the sides and back into your chosen length on top. It is a sharp, modern look that suits everything from a subtle, professional tidy-up to a bolder, higher fade, all finished with a proper shampoo cut and styling. #### What your skin fade covers A consultation-led cut focused on clean blending and a balanced shape. - Quick chat on what you want (low, mid or high fade, and how tight to go) - Shampoo and cut to prep the hair and set the shape - Skin fade clipper work with smooth transitions and tidy detailing - Blending into the top length so it looks natural from every angle - Edging and finishing for a crisp outline (kept realistic to your hairline) - Styling and simple advice so it is easy to manage at home ##### Who a skin fade is best for A skin fade works well if you want a consistently sharp finish that grows out neatly. It is ideal for: - Men who like a clean, structured look for work and weekends - Anyone who wants a close, cooler feel around the sides and neckline - Clients who train regularly and want a cut that stays tidy - Short styles that pair well with a closely groomed beard - Those who keep their hair very short alongside SMP or tricopigmentation (appearance-led, not medical) ##### How the appointment works We start with a quick consultation to agree the fade height, the level of skin exposure, and how you wear the top. The cut includes a shampoo to reset the hair, then the fade is built in stages for a smooth blend rather than harsh steps. Finally, the neckline and edges are refined and the cut is styled to show the finished shape. ##### Aftercare and maintenance To keep a skin fade looking crisp, most people rebook more often than with a longer cut. At home, use a light styling product that suits your hair type and avoid overloading the top so the fade stays balanced. If you want it looking fresh for a specific date, book a few days before rather than the night before. ### Ultimate Grooming Package URL: https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/services/ultimate-grooming-package Take a proper pause and reset your routine. The Ultimate Grooming Package brings hair and skin back to their best in one unhurried visit. We confirm timing and spacing during your consultation so the plan fits your schedule. ##### Aftercare & Maintenance Keep the scalp clean and dry for the first few days. Avoid heavy sweating, swimming and direct sun while initial settling takes place. Do not pick or exfoliate. Resume gentle shaving once the scalp feels settled, and moisturise lightly as advised. SMP is long lasting, with occasional top ups over time to keep colour and definition fresh. Tricopigmentation is designed to fade sooner and is refreshed more frequently. ### Scalp Tricopigmentation, Density Session URL: https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/services/scalp-micropigmentation-density-session Restore the look of thicker hair with a targeted scalp tricopigmentation density session here in Brighton. Micro impressions are placed between your existing hair to reduce scalp show-through, refine the hairline and lift overall coverage, keeping the finish soft and natural. We work with tricopigmentation, agreed during a proper consultation. #### What's Included A calm, consultation-led appointment focused on natural density. - Personal consultation to map goals, hairline shape and a density plan. - Shade selection and colour matching to your hair and skin tone. - Test dots where helpful to confirm tone and spacing. - Layered tricopigmentation application through thinning zones to reduce scalp contrast. - Hairline refinement and blending through parting or crown as needed. - Clear aftercare guidance and a maintenance plan. - Book with Peter Joannou Male Grooming and Barber Shop on 01273 328799. It also suits post-transplant density work to soften contrast around grafts. Good if you want to keep your usual hairstyle with subtle coverage that stands up in daylight and close-up. If you are comparing tricopigmentation vs scalp micropigmentation, we will advise on the best fit for your goals and maintenance preferences. ##### Duration & Appointment Timing Each density session is up to 240 minutes. Most clients complete a three-session plan: two appointments on consecutive days, then a final session after around 30 days to refine tone and detail. We build the result gradually so you can assess the look between visits. Appointment spacing may vary slightly to suit your schedule and skin response. ##### Aftercare & Maintenance Expect mild redness that settles within 24–48 hours. If you are planning a significant change, mention it when booking so we can allow the right time and guide you through the best approach. ##### Aftercare & Maintenance To keep the shape fresh, plan a tidy every 3 to 5 weeks depending on growth and style. Use a light amount of product. Choose matte paste or clay for texture and the look of extra density, or a light cream for longer hair. Work through dry or slightly damp hair, then finish with a cool blast to set. If thinning is a concern, avoid heavy shine that can expose the scalp. For lift, blow dry on medium heat, directing the hair into place before applying product. ### Complete Grooming Package URL: https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/services/complete-grooming-package Set aside time for a calm, complete reset here in Brighton. Rinse with cool water if needed and keep skin hydrated with a light moisturiser, and use SPF in the daytime. Rework your style with a little water the next morning, then finish with a small amount of product. Suitable for stubble through to fuller beards when you want a sharper outline, better symmetry and a neater moustache while keeping overall fullness. ##### Duration & Appointment Timing This is a focused 15 minute appointment designed to maintain shape and neatness. Arrive with your beard clean, dry and brushed out; we will finish with a rinse to clear loose hairs. If you need a complete reshape or your beard is significantly overgrown, we will need more time. If you are unsure which service to book, call 01273 328799 and we will advise. ##### Aftercare & Maintenance Rinse again at home if needed and pat dry. Apply a small amount of beard oil or balm to condition, add softness and tame flyaways. Brush daily to train the hairs into the new shape. Avoid heavy trimming yourself between visits; limit to the odd stray. To keep the outline crisp, most clients book every 1–2 weeks. For longer beards or a softer finish, every 2–4 weeks usually works well. ### Beard Trim & Line Up in Brighton URL: https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/services/beard-trim-and-line-up Keep your beard neat, defined and natural. Great before meetings, events or photos when you need everything sharp but not overdone. ##### Duration & Appointment Timing Allow 30 minutes for consultation, tidy, razor detailing and finish. Please arrive a touch early if you can. Book online at https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/ or call 01273 328799. Rebook every 1 to 2 weeks for crisp edges, or every 2 to 3 weeks for a fuller beard reshape. ### Clipper Cut Brighton URL: https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/services/clipper-cut-brighton Keep it simple and sharp. Our All Over Clipper Cut gives an even length across your head with your chosen guard, clean edges, and a tidy, low maintenance finish. #### What's Included A clean, consistent cut with a neat finish. - Brief consultation to confirm your guard length and finish. - One length clipper work across the whole head for an even result. - Edges, around the ears, and neckline neatly refined. - Quick rinse to remove loose hair and a dry finish. - Simple guidance on upkeep and guard length between visits. - Advice on lengths that work well with scalp micropigmentation (SMP) or tricopigmentation. ##### Who It's For If you want a sharp, low maintenance haircut with no fuss, this is for you. It suits busy days, active lifestyles, and anyone who prefers a clean, even look. It is a strong option if your hair is thinning or you wear scalp micropigmentation or tricopigmentation, as a shorter, even length reduces contrast and keeps everything looking consistent. Also ideal for resetting to one length between styles or after a longer gap between cuts. ##### Duration & Appointment Timing This appointment takes around 15 minutes, so it fits neatly into a lunch break or a quick stop while you are here in Brighton. We keep it efficient without rushing the finish. If you want a fade, taper, or scissor work on top, please book a longer service so there is proper time for the detail. ##### Aftercare & Maintenance Rinse at home if needed to remove any stray hairs, then keep the scalp comfortable with a light moisturiser if you wear very short grades. Use a gentle shampoo and go easy on heavy products. Most clients return every 2 to 4 weeks depending on hair growth and preferred length. If you have SMP or tricopigmentation, staying close to your agreed grade helps maintain a natural, blended look. ### Activated Charcoal Black Mask URL: https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/services/activated-charcoal-black-mask Revive tired, congested skin with an activated charcoal black mask that lifts impurities and excess oil. This peel-off treatment refines the look of pores and leaves a clean, matte finish so your skin feels fresh and smooth. #### What's Included A quick, efficient facial add-on that delivers a deeper cleanse. - Brief skin check and cleanse. - Warm towel to help open pores. - Even application of an activated charcoal black mask. - Set time for the mask to bind with surface debris and excess oil. - Gentle peel removal to lift impurities and fine vellus hairs. - Soothing toner and light moisturiser to finish. - Aftercare guidance tailored to your skin. ##### Who It's For For men who want a clearer, matte finish without fuss. Ideal if you notice blackheads, shine across the T-zone, or want a tidy-up before a meeting, night out, or event. Suitable for most skin types, especially combination and oily. If your skin is very sensitive or broken, application can be adjusted or a gentler option recommended. ##### Duration & Appointment Timing Allow 15 minutes. The mask works well as a stand-alone refresh or paired with a haircut or beard service for a clean, polished finish. ##### Aftercare & Maintenance Keep skin hands-off after your appointment. Avoid hot showers, steam rooms and heavy workouts for 12 hours. Moisturise and use SPF during the day. Skip strong exfoliants or retinoids for 24 hours. Repeat every 2 to 4 weeks for maintenance, or book as needed before events for a quick reset. ### Back and Sides Trim, Dry on Dry Hair URL: https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/services/back-and-sides-trim-dry-on-dry-hair Keep your cut sharp between visits with a precise back and sides tidy carried out on dry hair. Clean lines, smooth blending and a natural finish, without touching the length on top. #### What's Included A focused tidy to refresh the outline and keep your style crisp between full haircuts. - Quick consultation to confirm length, taper and neckline. - Clipper work and scissor over comb to refine the back and sides. - Tidy around ears and sideburns for a clean outline. - Tapered or natural neckline to suit your style. - Seamless blend into the top, leaving the top length unchanged. - Dry finish with light product if needed. - Advice on maintenance and when to book your next tidy. ##### Who It's For If your hair grows out at the sides before the top needs attention, this is for you. It suits short back and sides, faded styles needing a quick refresh, and longer top looks that only require the sides tidied. Helpful if the top is fine and you want to reduce bulk at the sides to balance the look. ##### Duration & Appointment Timing This service takes around 15 minutes and is focused on efficiency and accuracy. Please arrive with clean, dry hair for the most precise result. If you want the top cut or a restyle, book a full haircut so there is enough time. ##### Aftercare & Maintenance Wash and style as normal. Use lighter product on the sides to keep the shape neat. To maintain a sharp finish, book every 2 to 3 weeks, or sooner if your hair grows quickly. If you cycle or wear a helmet often, a slightly shorter interval helps keep the outline tidy. Book with Peter Joannou Barber Shop on 01273 328799, or visit us at 40 Middle St, Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1AL. ### Clipper Cut and Beard Trim URL: https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/services/clipper-cut-and-beard-trim An all over clipper cut paired with a well shaped beard gives you a sharper, balanced look that is easy to maintain. Here in Brighton, we keep it straightforward: a quick consultation to agree your guard length, beard shape and lines, then precise clipper work and a crisp line up for a tidy finish. #### What's Included A straightforward service focused on precision and a tidy result. - Brief consultation on length, face shape and preferred finish. - All over clipper cut to your chosen guard length. - Tidy up around ears, sideburns and neckline for a clean outline. - Beard trim and bulk reduction, shaped to suit your jaw and moustache. - Cheek and neck lines defined to your preference, natural or sharper. - Precise line up to finish for crisp edges. - Light product finish and simple styling advice. ##### Who It's For Men who want a clean, no fuss haircut and a beard that looks intentional, not overworked. Ideal for work, the gym, or weekends when you need to look put together without time spent styling. If your hair is thinning or your hairline is receding, a shorter, even clipper length can reduce contrast and make the result look neater. It also pairs well with a clean beard shape. If you already wear scalp micropigmentation, a consistent clipper length blends well; if you are considering SMP or tricopigmentation, this cut gives a clear read on how a shorter style will sit. ##### Duration & Appointment Timing Your appointment is 45 minutes, covering consultation, the clipper cut, beard trim and line up. Please arrive on time with clean, dry hair and beard so we can get straight to work. If you have a very long beard or want a bigger change, let us know when booking to allow the right time. ##### Aftercare & Maintenance Keep edges crisp by avoiding hats immediately after your cut and patting hair dry rather than rubbing. Style with a light matte product if you use one. Brush or comb your beard daily and apply a small amount of oil or balm to soften and keep the shape. Most clients maintain the look with a visit every 2 to 4 weeks; we can agree the best schedule for your growth. ## Service Categories ### Haircut Brighton URL: https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/service-categories/haircut-brighton Precision hair cutting in Brighton with a consultation-led approach. URL: https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/hair-transplant-scar-camouflage A hair transplant scar can usually be camouflaged rather than removed. Pigment is placed into and around the scar tissue to reduce the contrast against the surrounding hair, so the donor area reads as an even short crop instead of a pale patch. The scar is still there. It just stops being the thing people notice. This is one of the questions I get asked most, and it is almost always asked quietly, by someone who has spent a couple of years growing their hair longer at the back than they would like. Scar work is not the same job as ordinary tricopigmentation, and I do not treat it the same way. It starts with a test, not with treatment. More on that below. #### What kind of scar are we dealing with There are two, and they behave differently under pigment. **FUE scarring** shows up as a scattering of small round white dots across the back and sides, left where individual follicles were harvested. Individually they are tiny. The problem is the pattern. Cut your hair short and a few hundred pale dots against darker skin and stubble reads as a speckled, moth eaten donor area. This is the type that responds best, because the surrounding skin is otherwise intact and pigment can be blended right up to each dot. **FUT or strip scarring** is a single horizontal line across the back of the head, left by the older technique of removing a strip of scalp. It is more obvious at short lengths and harder to disguise, but it is far from hopeless. Pigment broken up across the line, matched to the stubble either side, takes it from a visible band to something you have to look for. There is a third factor that matters more than which surgery you had, and that is how the scar itself healed. Smooth, flat, well healed tissue holds pigment reasonably well. Raised, shiny or stretched tissue holds it patchily and may need more work to build. I will tell you which one you have at the consultation, and I will tell you if I think the result will disappoint you. #### What a realistic result looks like Camouflage, not erasure. Say that to yourself before you book anything, anywhere. Under stubble, at a normal viewing distance, a well camouflaged donor area usually looks like an ordinary short back and sides. Up close, under bright light, or with a completely shaved head, someone looking for a scar will still find one. Anybody promising to make a strip scar vanish entirely is selling you something. Scar tissue also takes pigment differently from healthy skin. It can absorb more, hold less, or fade at a different rate. Nobody can tell you in advance exactly how your scar will behave, which is why I test it before I treat it rather than guessing on day one. That gap between promise and reality is where the damage usually gets done in this industry. I have written more on that in my post on [scalp micropigmentation regrets](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/scalp-micropigmentation-regrets), which is worth reading before you book with anyone. #### How the work is staged, four sessions starting with a test Scar work runs over four sessions, and the first one is a test rather than a treatment. This is the most important thing to understand about covering a scar, and it is the part almost nobody else does. **Session one, the test.** I place three or four different dots on the scar. That is it. No attempt to cover anything. Each dot is done slightly differently, so I have something to compare. **Session two, ten days later.** I look at those dots and see how each one has taken. This is the whole point. Scar tissue does not behave like normal skin and it does not behave the same way on every person, so this tells me what your skin actually accepts rather than what should work in theory. Then I decide how to proceed and start the work properly. **Session three, ten days after that.** I look again at how everything is settling, then carry on building. **Session four, thirty days later.** The final session, once the work has had proper time to settle and show its true colour. Start to finish that is around seven weeks. Session one is short. The later sessions are longer, depending on how much area we are covering. > **Why I test first:** Anyone can put pigment into a scar on day one. The problem is that you only find out how the tissue took it a week or two later, and by then you have committed. Three or four test dots cost you almost nothing and tell me everything. I would rather spend a session finding out than spend a session guessing. It starts with a complimentary thirty minute consultation, and a patch test is required before any work begins. Density and scar work starts from £800, with a £150 deposit, and top ups later are 25 per cent of the original cost. Your exact plan and cost are confirmed at the consultation once I have seen the scar. The full list is on the [pricing page](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/pricing). If you want to understand the technique itself before you come in, my post on [tricopigmentation compared with traditional SMP](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/tricopigmentation-vs-smp) covers the difference. #### Getting to the shop I work from 40 Middle Street in Brighton, a short walk from the seafront and about fifteen minutes down from Brighton station. It is roughly an hour from London Victoria and half an hour from Gatwick, which is why a fair few of the people I treat come in from outside Sussex for the day. Paid parking is available at Churchill Square and along the seafront. Worth planning for if you are travelling. Scar work means four separate visits spread over about seven weeks, not one long day. The first one is short. #### Frequently asked questions ##### Can a hair transplant scar be removed completely? Not by pigment. Camouflage reduces the contrast between scar tissue and the surrounding scalp so the area blends at normal viewing distance, but the scar itself remains. Surgical scar revision is a separate route and a question for a surgeon rather than for me. ##### Why do you start with a test patch? Because scar tissue is unpredictable and no two scars take pigment the same way. I place three or four different dots at the first session, then look at them ten days later to see which approach your skin has actually accepted. It costs you one short visit and it stops the whole job being a guess. ##### Is FUE or FUT scarring easier to cover? FUE scarring generally responds better. The dots are small, the skin between them is healthy, and pigment can be blended tightly around each one. A FUT strip scar is a continuous line through altered tissue, so it takes more work and the honest ceiling on the result is lower. ##### How many sessions does scar work take? Four, spread over about seven weeks. The first is a short test session. The second is ten days later, once I can see how the test dots have taken. The third follows ten days after that, and the fourth and final session comes thirty days later, once everything has settled. ##### Can I shave my head afterwards? Often, yes, and that is the point for many people. A camouflaged donor area is what makes a very short crop or a shaved head a real option again. Whether it holds up at a full shave rather than short stubble depends on your scar, and I will give you a straight answer at the consultation. ##### What if I had my transplant abroad? It makes no difference to the pigment work. What matters is how the tissue healed and whether the scalp has fully settled, not which clinic or country it happened in. Bring any photographs you have from before the surgery if you still have them. #### Come and have it looked at If you have been growing your hair out to hide a donor scar, half an hour is all it takes to find out whether that is still necessary. The consultation is free, there is no obligation, and you will get a straight answer either way. Book at the shop through the [tricopigmentation page](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/tricopigmentation-brighton), or call 01273 328799. ### Scalp micropigmentation after a hair transplant, what it can and cannot fix URL: https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/scalp-micropigmentation-after-hair-transplant Scalp micropigmentation after a hair transplant adds the appearance of density between grafts, softens the look of a donor scar and rebuilds a hairline that has thinned again since surgery. It cannot grow hair and it cannot undo a poorly planned transplant. It works alongside your surgery, not instead of it. Plenty of people come to see me a year or two after a transplant. The surgery went fine, the grafts took, and the result is still not quite what they pictured. That is a very normal place to be, and it is usually fixable. #### Why a transplant can look thin even when it worked A transplant moves hair, it does not create more of it. A surgeon takes follicles from the back and sides and redistributes them across the top, so the total amount of hair on your head stays roughly the same. Spread over a wider area, that hair reads as less dense than it did before. The scalp underneath is the problem. Pale skin showing through dark hair creates contrast, and contrast is what the eye picks up as thinness. Pigment placed between the grafts closes that gap. The hair has not changed, but the background has, and the whole area reads fuller. This is also why a second transplant is not always the answer. If there is limited donor hair left, taking more from the back to fill the top can leave you thinner at the back and no better off overall. #### What pigment can realistically do for you It comes down to four things. It fills the gaps between grafts, so light no longer bounces off bare scalp in the spaces the surgeon could not reach. It [disguises donor area scarring](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/hair-transplant-scar-camouflage), both the dotted pattern left by an FUE procedure and the linear strip scar from older FUT surgery. It softens a hairline that was drawn too sharply, which is one of the more common regrets after a transplant. And it gives you a genuine fallback if you decide to shave down, because a well pigmented scalp lets you wear a very short crop without the donor area giving the game away. What it cannot do is grow hair, change the density of the hair you have, or hide a hairline that was placed in the wrong position. It also cannot promise a match to a colour that is still changing. Pigment sits in the skin, hair does not, and the two age at different rates. If you have a medical question about your transplant, whether the grafts have fully matured or whether more surgery is sensible, that is a conversation for your surgeon or your GP. I can only tell you what pigment will look like on the scalp in front of me. #### How soon after surgery can you have it done Wait until the scalp has fully healed and the transplanted hair has matured. That typically means somewhere between six and twelve months after surgery, and your surgeon should sign it off before you book anything. Working on skin that is still settling is how you end up with uneven results. There is no rush. The area often looks better at month nine than it did at month five, and it is worth seeing where the hair actually lands before deciding what needs filling. #### What the sessions look like Tricopigmentation is done in stages, not in one hit. For density work through your existing hair, I run the first two sessions on consecutive days, then leave a thirty day gap, then finish with a third session. That gap matters. It lets the pigment settle so we can both see the true colour before we commit to the final depth. Scar work is different again. Because scar tissue is unpredictable, that one starts with a short test session and runs over four visits. I have set the full plan out in my post on [covering a hair transplant scar](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/hair-transplant-scar-camouflage). > **Why I would rather start too light:** It is straightforward to add more on a later visit and very awkward to take away. I build gradually and deliberately, and I would rather start lighter than you expect and meet you in the middle than hand you something you cannot undo. Density sessions run to around four hours. Everything starts with a complimentary thirty minute consultation, and a patch test is required before any treatment. Density work through existing hair starts from £800 and a full shaved look starts from £1,400, with a £150 deposit to hold the dates. Top ups later on are charged at 25 per cent of the original cost. You can see the full breakdown on the [tricopigmentation pricing page](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/pricing). If you are still weighing up the technique itself, my post on [tricopigmentation compared with traditional SMP](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/tricopigmentation-vs-smp) explains why I work the way I do. #### Coming to Brighton for treatment The shop is at 40 Middle Street, a few minutes from the seafront and the Lanes, and about a fifteen minute walk down from Brighton station. Trains run from London Victoria in around an hour and from Gatwick in about thirty minutes, so a lot of the people I treat travel in for the day. There is paid parking at Churchill Square and along the seafront. The consecutive day structure suits travelling clients well. Two days in Brighton, then a month at home while the pigment settles, then one more visit to finish. #### Frequently asked questions ##### Will scalp micropigmentation damage my transplanted hair? No. The pigment is placed in the skin between the follicles, not into them. The work is deliberately shallow and the needle does not go near the graft itself. It is worth waiting until the transplant has fully healed, which is why I ask for your surgeon's sign off before booking. ##### Can it hide an FUE donor scar? In many cases, yes. FUE leaves a scattering of small pale dots across the back and sides, and pigment placed around them reduces the contrast so the area reads as an even short crop rather than a speckled one. Scars are staged differently from density work, starting with a small test patch so I can see how your tissue takes pigment before committing to anything. ##### Is it worth having if I am planning a second transplant? Often it is worth waiting. If more surgery is likely within the next year, have the transplant first and the pigment afterwards, so we are working with the final layout of your hair. If a second transplant is uncertain or has been ruled out, there is no reason to delay. ##### How long will it last? Tricopigmentation is designed to fade evenly rather than sit in your skin permanently, typically over twelve to eighteen months, then a single top up refreshes it at a quarter of the original price. Treat any figure as a guide rather than a guarantee. Skin type, sun exposure, chlorine and how much you sweat all change the timeline. ##### Do I have to shave my head? Not at all. Density work is done through existing hair, and it is one of the more common reasons people come in after a transplant. Shaving down is an option, not a requirement, and it is worth knowing that pigment makes that option available to you later if you ever want it. #### Ready to talk it through If your transplant has healed and you are still not happy with the density, bring it in and let me look at it properly. The consultation is complimentary, it takes half an hour, and you will leave knowing whether pigment is worth doing in your case or whether it is not. URL: https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/scalp-micropigmentation-cost-uk Scalp micropigmentation in the UK typically costs between £800 and £2,400, with the price set by the area covered, the result you want, and the practitioner you choose. A density treatment starts from £800, a full buzz cut effect from £1,400, and total alopecia work from £2,400. Treatments offered for a fraction of those numbers, especially abroad, are almost never the saving they look. Here is what the price actually reflects, and why it varies. #### The UK price range, in real numbers Three figures cover the main range of work at the shop on Middle Street, and they are representative of properly priced SMP and Tricopigmentation across the UK. **Density treatment, from £800.** Reducing the contrast across thinning areas at the top or crown, without going for the full shaved look. **Full buzz cut effect, from £1,400.** The complete shaved head appearance, hairline and all, designed for men who wear the head closely clipped. **Total alopecia, from £2,400.** Full scalp design and pigmentation for clients with little or no hair, typically running across more sessions than a standard plan. Two specialist treatments sit outside the main range: scar camouflage (for FUE and FUT transplant scars) and home visits, both priced on application because the scope varies. After the initial plan, a single top up session is priced at a quarter of the original cost and refreshes the result every twelve to eighteen months. A £150 deposit is taken before treatment begins and is deducted from the final invoice. #### What you are actually paying for A quality SMP price is not just for the pigment in the skin. It covers a free in-person consultation with the practitioner who will do the work, time to look at your scalp, listen to what you want, and design the result with you before anything starts. It covers a three-session plan, not a single rushed appointment, with a thirty day rest before the finishing session. It covers the accountability of someone you can walk back to if anything is not right, which is much harder with a clinic in another country. The pigment itself is the cheapest part of the bill, and the part you cannot see from the price tag. > **A note from Peter on price expectations:** "Be realistic about what you are paying for. A proper Tricopigmentation result is built across three sessions, with hours of design and consultation time, by someone you can walk back to if something is not right. A cheap price abroad or from a non-specialist is not the same product. You get one chance to do this well. Get it as right as possible the first time." #### The hidden cost of going cheap A bad result costs more than a good one. Correction work, where it is possible at all, is more difficult than the original treatment and always more expensive. Laser tattoo removal can soften older or shallower SMP, but it usually takes several sessions at hundreds of pounds each. A skilled practitioner can sometimes blend or cover problem areas with corrective Tricopigmentation, though it takes more sessions than a fresh design would have. The full repair bill on a botched SMP, especially one done abroad, can run higher than a quality UK treatment would have cost in the first place. Then there is the cost you cannot put a number on. Wearing a result you do not like on your face for the time it takes to fix or fade it. That is the real downside of cutting corners on price. > **On the long term cost of Tricopigmentation:** Tricopigmentation fades cleanly over twelve to eighteen months, with a top up priced at a quarter of the original treatment. Across five years your total spend is the original plus a small refresh each year, with the design free to evolve as your hair and your face change. Permanent SMP is one larger upfront commitment that you live with either way. #### How the consultation and quote work Every Tricopigmentation treatment is tailored, so the figures above are guide prices, not fixed quotes. After the free consultation you receive a written quote reflecting your specific design, the area covered, the session count, and any specialist work. The £150 deposit secures your first session and is deducted from the final invoice. The [full pricing breakdown sits on the pricing page](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/pricing) if you want to check the numbers against your own plan. #### Frequently asked questions ##### How much is scalp micropigmentation per session? A standard plan is priced as a complete package across three sessions, not per session. The total ranges from £800 for a density treatment to £2,400 for total alopecia work. Larger areas and complex jobs may run to additional sessions, and the additional sessions are included in the original quote rather than added on later. ##### Why is SMP cheaper abroad, and is it worth it? Cheaper prices abroad reflect lower regulation, lower overheads, and often less experienced practitioners. Any cost saving usually disappears once you factor in flights, accommodation, time off work, and the chance of needing correction. A poor result is very difficult to come back and get rectified months after the fact. ##### How much is a Tricopigmentation top up? A top up is priced at twenty five percent of the original treatment cost. That works out at from £200 for a density treatment, from £350 for a buzz cut effect, and from £600 for total alopecia work. The top up is completed in a single session by Peter. ##### Is the consultation free? Yes. The initial thirty minute consultation is free, in person, and there is no obligation to book on the day. You walk away with a clear written quote, design notes, and the session plan if you decide to go ahead. --- **More on Tricopigmentation and SMP** - [Hair loss tattoo, what it is and how it works](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/hair-loss-tattoo-brighton) - [Tricopigmentation vs SMP, what is actually different](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/tricopigmentation-vs-smp) - [Scalp micropigmentation regrets, what to think about first](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/scalp-micropigmentation-regrets) - [Scalp Micropigmentation and Tricopigmentation in Brighton, the service page](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/tricopigmentation-brighton) - [Full pricing](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/pricing) --- #### Ready to get a proper number for your plan The fastest way to get a real price for your specific situation is the free consultation. Both place pigment in the scalp to create the appearance of hair follicles. The real differences sit in how long the result lasts, how deep the pigment goes, and whether the work is designed to stay put or evolve with you over time. Here is what each one is, where they overlap, and where I steer clients between them. #### What SMP and Tricopigmentation actually are SMP, short for Scalp Micropigmentation, is the original version. Pigment is placed in the deeper dermis with tattoo style ink, and the result is built to be permanent. SMP runs over two or three sessions and is built around the shaved or buzz cut look. Tricopigmentation is a refinement of the same idea, developed in Italy. The pigment sits in the upper dermis, is finer, and is formulated to fade evenly over twelve to eighteen months. The work is built across three sessions, with a thirty day rest before the finishing session, which is where the result is assessed and strengthened where it needs it. Density and hairline designs are both within range, not just the shaved look. If you want a longer read on the procedure end of things, the [hair loss tattoo blog](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/hair-loss-tattoo-brighton) walks through it in detail. #### The four real differences **Longevity.** SMP is permanent. Tricopigmentation fades over twelve to eighteen months and is refreshed with a single top up session at a quarter of the original price. **Depth.** SMP sits in the deeper dermis. Tricopigmentation sits in the upper dermis. Deeper pigment softens and blurs over years. Upper layer pigment holds its sharpness for its lifespan, then fades cleanly. **Evolution.** Hairlines mature, hair colour changes. A permanent treatment locks in the design that suited you at thirty five and may look less natural at fifty. A semi permanent treatment lets the design move with you. **Finish.** Tricopigmentation uses finer impressions, designed to mimic real follicles closely, especially in density work. That is the reason the work at the shop on Middle Street is Tricopigmentation rather than SMP. > **On the fade as a feature:** Clients tell me they like that Tricopigmentation fades over time. It gives them the chance to try it. If they want to carry on, the top up runs at roughly a quarter of the original price, every twelve to eighteen months. Permanent SMP does not offer the same try before you commit option. #### Which one I recommend, and when I do not There is no universally better treatment. The right choice matches your situation. Tricopigmentation suits a natural finish, density work as well as shaved, the freedom to refresh over time, and avoiding a permanent commitment in your thirties or forties. A lot of clients come to me for it because they have seen photos of the work and compared it to what they have seen online. They want it to look like nature did it, not the straight hard line at the front and on the temples that some clinics still produce. > **A note on who I cannot treat:** If you have a lot of white hair, or very light hair on the edge of red or ginger, the pigment will not sit naturally because there is no white ink to match it. The only option is a full scalp treatment, which is a much bigger job, and I will tell you upfront before you decide. Worth knowing before you book anywhere, not just here. The honest way to choose is a consultation. You can [book a Tricopigmentation consultation in Brighton](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/tricopigmentation-brighton) and Peter will walk through both options. If SMP is the better fit for you, I will say so. If neither is right, I will say that too. The [honest list of SMP regrets](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/scalp-micropigmentation-regrets) is worth reading before any procedure on your scalp. #### Frequently asked questions ##### Are SMP and Tricopigmentation the same thing? No, but they are close relations. Both place pigment in the scalp to create the look of hair follicles. SMP is the original, permanent version with pigment in the deeper skin. Tricopigmentation is the newer, semi permanent version, with finer pigment in the upper skin that begins to noticeably fade, how quick it fades depends on each individual. The condition of their skin, what exposures it has to the sun, chlorine in pools, sweating etc ##### How long does Tricopigmentation last compared to SMP? Tricopigmentation lasts twelve to eighteen months before a single top up session refreshes the result. SMP is designed to be permanent, typically holding for four to eight years before noticeable fade, and then requires a more significant refresh. Tricopigmentation fades evenly by design. SMP slowly softens and blurs over the years. ##### Can you have Tricopigmentation if you have already had SMP? In many cases yes, but it depends on the existing work. Older SMP that has faded or blurred can sometimes be refined or covered with a Tricopigmentation layer. Heavily pigmented or recently completed SMP needs assessment in person. Bring photos to a consultation and we will tell you what is realistic before you commit to anything. #### Ready to talk it through If you are weighing up Tricopigmentation vs SMP, a thirty minute consultation in Brighton usually settles it. We walk through your hair, your goals, and both options, with no pressure to book. SMP is a permanent procedure, it costs real money, and a poorly designed result lives on your face for years. The regret stories are real. They are also avoidable. Here are the five things that cause people to regret SMP, and the questions to ask before you book anywhere. > **A note from Peter:** "Sometimes men can be a bit too flippant about it. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. But this is your scalp. You get one chance to do it well. So get it as right as possible by reading about the person who's going to do it. Speak to as many people as you can." #### Five common regrets, and where they come from **A hairline set too low or too aggressively.** The hairline is the single biggest mistake in SMP. A line drawn the way you wore it at twenty five looks unnatural at forty five. An over defined line reads as artificial in bright light. A practitioner who draws what you ask for, without designing for your age, your head shape, and how you actually wear your hair, is the warning sign. The hard line at the front and on the temples is the giveaway of bad work, and it is the single thing clients ask me to avoid most often. **Choosing permanent SMP when Tricopigmentation would have suited better.** SMP lasts many years. Tricopigmentation fades cleanly over twelve to eighteen months, so the design can evolve as your hair and your face change. Permanent SMP becomes a regret when hair loss patterns shift, hair goes silver, or your style changes. [The Tricopigmentation vs SMP comparison](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/tricopigmentation-vs-smp) sets out which treatment suits which person. **Pigment that turned blue over time.** Cheap pigment placed too deep can shift colour as it ages. Skin tone affects this. Carbon based pigments placed in the upper layer of the skin, on the right skin type, do not carry the same risk. **A finish that looks tattooed, not natural.** Dots that are too dark, too uniform, or too rounded read as a tattoo. Real follicles are irregular in size, shade and angle. Work that mimics that detail, built up gradually rather than in one heavy pass, looks like nature did it. Work built for speed does not. **Going to the cheapest practitioner.** Quality SMP in the UK costs between £1,000 and £3,000 depending on coverage. Treatments offered at a fraction of that are faster, deeper and far less precise. A correction job always costs more than the original would have if done properly. The same logic applies to overseas clinics offering bargain prices. > **A note from Peter on overseas clinics:** "A lot of these places abroad are unregulated. If there is a problem, it is very difficult to go back and get it rectified. Be realistic about your expectations. Sometimes the answer is not a cheap treatment a long way from home. Sometimes it is a proper consultation with someone you can actually go back to." #### How to make sure you do not join them Three things separate good SMP from regret SMP. You can check them before paying a deposit. A proper consultation, free, in person, with the practitioner who will do the actual work. Not a sales call. Ask any question, see real before and after photos of their own clients (not stock images), and walk away to think about it. A written plan. Session count, timing between sessions, pigment used, design intent, and price. If any of that is vague, the work will be too. A practitioner who will turn you away. The strongest sign someone is the right person is that they tell you when SMP is not the right call. There is a [longer read on hair loss tattoos and how the work runs in the shop](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/hair-loss-tattoo-brighton) if you want to see what a proper plan looks like. You can also [book a Tricopigmentation consultation in Brighton](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/tricopigmentation-brighton) and we will walk through both options. If neither is right, I will say so. #### Frequently asked questions ##### Do people regret SMP? Plenty of people do not regret SMP at all, and there are excellent practitioners working in the UK. Regret tends to cluster around the same five issues: hairline design, choosing permanent over semi permanent, poor pigment quality, an unnatural finish, and going cheap. Every one of them is avoidable with the right consultation and the right person. ##### Can SMP be fixed if it goes wrong? Some bad SMP can be softened or improved. Laser tattoo removal works on older or shallower work and may take several sessions. A skilled practitioner can sometimes blend or cover problem areas with corrective work. Fully reversing a permanent SMP result is difficult and expensive. Correction always costs more than the original would have if done properly. ##### Is Tricopigmentation a way to avoid the regret risk? For many men, yes. Tricopigmentation fades over twelve to eighteen months, so a result that does not age well does not stay with you forever. The design can be adjusted at your top up session, priced at a quarter of the original cost. It is not regret proof, but the consequences of a less than perfect outcome are far smaller than with permanent SMP. ##### Should I have my SMP done abroad to save money? A cheaper price abroad is rarely the saving it looks like once you factor in the risk. Many overseas clinics are unregulated, and a poor result is very difficult to go back and get corrected. Quality SMP in the UK between £1,000 and £3,000 includes accountability, follow up, and the ability to walk back into the shop if anything is not right. #### Ready to talk it through SMP done well is one of the truly confidence restoring things a man can do. SMP done badly is a slow source of self consciousness. The difference is the consultation. You can [see how the consultation and three session plan runs at the shop on Middle Street](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/tricopigmentation-brighton), or call 01273 328799 to book a free thirty minute slot. ### Modern Mullet vs Classic Mullet, What’s the Difference URL: https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/Modern-mullet-vs-classic-mullet Modern mullet vs classic mullet, a barber explains the difference, which suits you, what to ask for, and how to style it, written by Peter in Brighton. ### Hair Loss Tattoo, What It Is, How It Works, And Why It Looks So Natural URL: https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/hair-loss-tattoo-brighton If you have been searching for a hair loss tattoo in Brighton, what you are really looking at is scalp micropigmentation, also called Tricopigmentation. It is not a traditional tattoo. It is a precise pigment treatment that recreates the look of natural hair follicles in the upper layer of the scalp, restoring density where you have thinned, or sharpening a hairline where you have lost it. Done well, nobody notices the treatment. They just notice you look like yourself again. #### What a hair loss tattoo actually is The word "tattoo" gets attached because the work happens in the scalp and looks similar at first glance. The science is different. Fine impressions of pigment sit in the upper layer of the skin, each one designed to mimic a single shaved hair follicle. They create the look of density, a defined hairline, or the clean shadow of a buzz cut. Tricopigmentation is a refined form of the treatment, built around a softer, more natural finish than older dot work. The pigment is specifically formulated to begin to fade evenly over twelve to eighteen months. That fade is a feature, not a flaw, because it gives clients the chance to try the result before committing for the long term. You can read more about [Scalp Micropigmentation and Tricopigmentation in Brighton](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/tricopigmentation-brighton) on the service page. #### Who I can help, and who I have to tell to wait Tricopigmentation suits four typical situations. **Thinning through the top or crown.** Reducing the contrast between the hair and the visible scalp, so what you do have looks fuller. **A receding hairline.** A subtle reset of the hairline, designed in proportion to your face, never a hard line. **A close shaved or buzzed look.** Creating the impression of an even, freshly clipped scalp with a cleaner edge. **Transplant scars and patchy areas.** Softening the contrast around FUE and FUT scars or alopecia patches. I cannot help everyone, and that matters. If you have a lot of white hair, or very light hair on the edge of red or ginger, the pigment will not sit naturally because there is no white ink to match it. The only option in that case is a full scalp treatment, which is a much bigger job, and I will tell you that upfront before you decide. There is more on the things that genuinely cause people to regret a hair loss tattoo in my [honest list of SMP regrets](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/scalp-micropigmentation-regrets), and the white hair caveat is one of the most important on it. > **A note on scar work:** FUE and FUT transplant scars are treated slightly differently. The skin there can be tougher, so I tend to use a longer gap between the first two sessions and start with a test area to see how the dot takes and the colour behaves. Better to find that out on a small patch than across a whole scar. #### The three session plan, and why it does not happen in one A hair loss tattoo is built across three sessions. The first two are usually booked one day apart to lay the base of the result. After that there is a thirty day break to let the skin settle and the pigment stabilise. The third session is for assessing and strengthening the result where it needs it. Complicated jobs can run longer. Scar work, total alopecia, or a very large area might run to five sessions or more. I would rather take an extra session and do the job properly than rush an outcome that lives on your face for a year and a half. After the initial plan, the treatment is refreshed at a single top up session every twelve to eighteen months, priced at a quarter of the original cost. #### What "natural" really means Clients often come to me after seeing other people's work online and wanting something different. They do not want the straight hard line at the front and on the temples that gives away a tattooed scalp in bright light. They want it to look like nature did it. We design the hairline together. I look at your scalp, listen to what you want, and decipher what you actually need from what you have told me. Then I tell you what I can envisage will work for your face and your style. We agree it before we touch the skin. If you are weighing this up against permanent SMP and wondering which is right for you, [Tricopigmentation vs SMP](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/tricopigmentation-vs-smp) sets the comparison out in full. > **A proudest moment, in Peter's words:** "One of my proudest moments was a lady with total alopecia. She came in with photographs of what she liked. She had a great scalp to work with. I designed a hairline, showed her, and we worked on it together, bringing it forward. With a woman's hairline you go for a slightly sharper finish, because women do not recede at the temples the way men do. We built it up over seven or eight sessions. Some of them were marathons. She sat so still. The results were spectacular. She looked absolutely stunning. What a very proud moment." #### Frequently asked questions ##### How long does a hair loss tattoo last? A hair loss tattoo holds its colour and definition for approximately 12-18 months it starts to fade, depending on the person it can take longer or slightly shorter. The key things that determine this are the condition of the scalp, if it’s a little dry it may fade a little quicker . Also sweating, sun, chlorine in pools can effect how long it lasts. ##### How much does a hair loss tattoo cost in the UK? Pricing depends on the area covered and the look you want. A density treatment starts from £800, a full buzz cut effect from £1,400, and treatment for total alopecia from £2,400. Every quote includes the full three session plan, and the consultation itself is free. ##### Is a hair loss tattoo permanent? It is semi permanent by design. The pigment sits in the upper layer of the skin rather than the deeper layers used for traditional tattoos, so it fades gently over twelve to eighteen months. That lets the design evolve with your hair, your skin, and your style over time. ##### Does it hurt? Sensitivity varies. Many clients describe it as mild discomfort rather than pain. The sessions are short, broken up with breaks, and I start gently to see how your skin responds. #### Ready to talk it through A hair loss tattoo done well is one of the truly confidence restoring things a man can do for himself.
