Tricopigmentation vs SMP, what is actually different

Tricopigmentation and SMP look like the same treatment at first glance. Both place pigment in the scalp to create the appearance of hair follicles. The real differences sit in how long the result lasts, how deep the pigment goes, and whether the work is designed to stay put or evolve with you over time. Here is what each one is, where they overlap, and where I steer clients between them.
What SMP and Tricopigmentation actually are
SMP, short for Scalp Micropigmentation, is the original version. Pigment is placed in the deeper dermis with tattoo style ink, and the result is built to be permanent. SMP runs over two or three sessions and is built around the shaved or buzz cut look.
Tricopigmentation is a refinement of the same idea, developed in Italy. The pigment sits in the upper dermis, is finer, and is formulated to fade evenly over twelve to eighteen months. The work is built across three sessions, with a thirty day rest before the finishing session, which is where the result is assessed and strengthened where it needs it. Density and hairline designs are both within range, not just the shaved look. If you want a longer read on the procedure end of things, the hair loss tattoo blog walks through it in detail.
The four real differences
Longevity. SMP is permanent. Tricopigmentation fades over twelve to eighteen months and is refreshed with a single top up session at a quarter of the original price.
Depth. SMP sits in the deeper dermis. Tricopigmentation sits in the upper dermis. Deeper pigment softens and blurs over years. Upper layer pigment holds its sharpness for its lifespan, then fades cleanly.
Evolution. Hairlines mature, hair colour changes. A permanent treatment locks in the design that suited you at thirty five and may look less natural at fifty. A semi permanent treatment lets the design move with you.
Finish. Tricopigmentation uses finer impressions, designed to mimic real follicles closely, especially in density work. That is the reason the work at the shop on Middle Street is Tricopigmentation rather than SMP.
On the fade as a feature: Clients tell me they like that Tricopigmentation fades over time. It gives them the chance to try it. If they want to carry on, the top up runs at roughly a quarter of the original price, every twelve to eighteen months. Permanent SMP does not offer the same try before you commit option.
Which one I recommend, and when I do not
There is no universally better treatment. The right choice matches your situation.
Tricopigmentation suits a natural finish, density work as well as shaved, the freedom to refresh over time, and avoiding a permanent commitment in your thirties or forties. A lot of clients come to me for it because they have seen photos of the work and compared it to what they have seen online. They want it to look like nature did it, not the straight hard line at the front and on the temples that some clinics still produce.
SMP suits a long term shaved look, a desire to avoid annual top up sessions, and a design built to settle in for years. If that is what you want, an excellent SMP practitioner is the right call, and I will tell you that honestly.
A note on who I cannot treat: If you have a lot of white hair, or very light hair on the edge of red or ginger, the pigment will not sit naturally because there is no white ink to match it. The only option is a full scalp treatment, which is a much bigger job, and I will tell you upfront before you decide. Worth knowing before you book anywhere, not just here.
The honest way to choose is a consultation. You can book a Tricopigmentation consultation in Brighton and we will walk through both options. If SMP is the better fit for you, I will say so. If neither is right, I will say that too. The honest list of SMP regrets is worth reading before any procedure on your scalp.
Frequently asked questions
Are SMP and Tricopigmentation the same thing?
No, but they are close relations. Both place pigment in the scalp to create the look of hair follicles. SMP is the original, permanent version with pigment in the deeper skin. Tricopigmentation is the newer, semi permanent version, with finer pigment in the upper skin that fades cleanly over twelve to eighteen months.
How long does Tricopigmentation last compared to SMP?
Tricopigmentation lasts twelve to eighteen months before a single top up session refreshes the result. SMP is designed to be permanent, typically holding for four to eight years before noticeable fade, and then requires a more significant refresh. Tricopigmentation fades evenly by design. SMP slowly softens and blurs over the years.
Can you have Tricopigmentation if you have already had SMP?
In many cases yes, but it depends on the existing work. Older SMP that has faded or blurred can sometimes be refined or covered with a Tricopigmentation layer. Heavily pigmented or recently completed SMP needs assessment in person. Bring photos to a consultation and we will tell you what is realistic before you commit to anything.
