If you have been searching for a hair loss tattoo in Brighton, what you are really looking at is scalp micropigmentation, also called Tricopigmentation. It is not a traditional tattoo. It is a precise pigment treatment that recreates the look of natural hair follicles in the upper layer of the scalp, restoring density where you have thinned, or sharpening a hairline where you have lost it. Done well, nobody notices the treatment. They just notice you look like yourself again.

## What a hair loss tattoo actually is

The word "tattoo" gets attached because the work happens in the scalp and looks similar at first glance. The science is different. Fine impressions of pigment sit in the upper layer of the skin, each one designed to mimic a single shaved hair follicle. They create the look of density, a defined hairline, or the clean shadow of a buzz cut.

Tricopigmentation is a refined form of the treatment, built around a softer, more natural finish than older dot work. The pigment is specifically formulated to fade evenly over twelve to eighteen months. That fade is a feature, not a flaw, because it gives clients the chance to try the result before committing for the long term. You can read more about [Scalp Micropigmentation and Tricopigmentation in Brighton](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/tricopigmentation-brighton) on the service page.

## Who I can help, and who I have to tell to wait

Tricopigmentation suits four typical situations.

**Thinning through the top or crown.** Reducing the contrast between the hair and the visible scalp, so what you do have looks fuller.

**A receding hairline.** A subtle reset of the hairline, designed in proportion to your face, never a hard line.

**A close shaved or buzzed look.** Creating the impression of an even, freshly clipped scalp with a cleaner edge.

**Transplant scars and patchy areas.** Softening the contrast around FUE and FUT scars or alopecia patches.

I cannot help everyone, and that matters. If you have a lot of white hair, or very light hair on the edge of red or ginger, the pigment will not sit naturally because there is no white ink to match it. The only option in that case is a full scalp treatment, which is a much bigger job, and I will tell you that upfront before you decide. There is more on the things that genuinely cause people to regret a hair loss tattoo in my [honest list of SMP regrets](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/scalp-micropigmentation-regrets), and the white hair caveat is one of the most important on it.

> **A note on scar work:** FUE and FUT transplant scars are treated slightly differently. The skin there can be tougher, so I tend to use a longer gap between the first two sessions and start with a test area to see how the dot takes and the colour behaves. Better to find that out on a small patch than across a whole scar.

## The three session plan, and why it does not happen in one

A hair loss tattoo is built across three sessions. The first two are usually booked one day apart to lay the base of the result. After that there is a thirty day break to let the skin settle and the pigment stabilise. The third session is for assessing and strengthening the result where it needs it.

Complicated jobs can run longer. Scar work, total alopecia, or a very large area might run to five sessions or more. I would rather take an extra session and do the job properly than rush an outcome that lives on your face for a year and a half.

After the initial plan, the treatment is refreshed at a single top up session every twelve to eighteen months, priced at a quarter of the original cost.

## What "natural" really means

Clients often come to me after seeing other people's work online and wanting something different. They do not want the straight hard line at the front and on the temples that gives away a tattooed scalp in bright light. They want it to look like nature did it.

We design the hairline together. I look at your scalp, listen to what you want, and decipher what you actually need from what you have told me. Then I tell you what I can envisage will work for your face and your style. We agree it before we touch the skin. If you are weighing this up against permanent SMP and wondering which is right for you, [Tricopigmentation vs SMP](https://www.peterjoannou.co.uk/blog/tricopigmentation-vs-smp) sets the comparison out in full.

> **A proudest moment, in Peter's words:** "One of my proudest moments was a lady with total alopecia. She came in with photographs of what she liked. She had a great scalp to work with. I designed a hairline, showed her, and we worked on it together, bringing it forward. With a woman's hairline you go for a slightly sharper finish, because women do not recede at the temples the way men do. We built it up over seven or eight sessions. Some of them were marathons. She sat so still. The results were spectacular. She looked absolutely stunning. What a very proud moment."

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does a hair loss tattoo last?

A hair loss tattoo holds its colour and definition for approximately 12-18 months it starts to fade, depending on the person it can take longer or slightly shorter. The key things that determine this are the condition of the scalp, if it’s a little dry it may fade a little quicker . Also sweating, sun, chlorine in pools can effect how long it lasts.

### How much does a hair loss tattoo cost in the UK?

Pricing depends on the area covered and the look you want. A density treatment starts from £800, a full buzz cut effect from £1,400, and treatment for total alopecia from £2,400. Every quote includes the full three session plan, and the consultation itself is free.

### Is a hair loss tattoo permanent?

It is semi permanent by design. The pigment sits in the upper layer of the skin rather than the deeper layers used for traditional tattoos, so it fades gently over twelve to eighteen months. That lets the design evolve with your hair, your skin, and your style over time.

### Does it hurt?

Sensitivity varies. Many clients describe it as mild discomfort rather than pain. The sessions are short, broken up with breaks, and I start gently to see how your skin responds.

## Ready to talk it through

A hair loss tattoo done well is one of the truly confidence restoring things a man can do for himself. Done badly, it is a slow source of self consciousness. The difference is the consultation.
